THE THING THAT VIOLET REMEMBERED MOST AFTER GETTING SHOT WAS LIAM KNELT NEXT TO HER HOLDING HER HAND. AFTER THAT, ALL SHE COULD REMEMBER WAS THE CEILING IN THE PRIVATE ROOM SHE WAS IN. SHE KNEW SHE’D UNDERGONE SURGERY FOR THE GUNSHOT TO HER RIBS, APPARENTLY, SHE’D BEEN LUCKY. WELL, SHE’D HAD TO DO WHAT SHE DID, THE GUY WOULD HAVE SHOT LIAM AND THAT WASN’T SOMETHING SHE COULD ALLOW – NO MATTER HOW MUCH HE HATED HER.

HER NOT HAVING HIM IN HER LIFE, EVEN AS A PARTNER THAT BARELY SPOKE TO HER, AFTER THEIR KISS, EVEN MORE SO, WAS NOT AN OPTION. HER FRIENDS WOULD CALL HER CRAZY.

MAYBE SHE WAS.

AS SHE OPENED HER EYES AGAIN, SHE SAW HER PARENTS STOOD OVER HER AND SHE GAVE THEM A SMALL SMILE, “HEY.” THEY BOTH PROCEEDED TO KISS HER AND TELL HER THEY WERE SO WORRIED. “MOMMA, IT’S FINE. SEE LOOK I’M ALL GOOD.” SHE WASN’T THOUGH. NOT BY A LONG SHOT.

A THROAT CLEARING BEHIND WHERE HER PARENTS WERE STOOD CAUSED THEM ALL TO LOOK AROUND AND HER FATHER IMMEDIATELY TOLD THE PERSON THEY WEREN’T WELCOME. SHE REALISED IT WAS LIAM A FEW SECONDS LATER.

"DAD, IT’S FINE. WHY DON’T YOU GO AND EAT….YOU’RE BOTH PROBABLY STARVING.” THEY NODDED RELUCTANTLY AND SHE WAITED UNTIL THEY HAD LEFT, “WHAT DO YOU WANT, LIAM?” SHE ASKED, VOICE STILL WEAK AFTER NOT USING IT AND BEING DEHADRATED. WITH THAT, SHE TRIED TO MOVE HERSELF AND GET SOME WATER BUT COULDN'T, "YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO COME AND SEE ME. DID OUR SECTION CHEIF TELL YOU YOU HAD TO COME?"

Liam sipped at the lukewarm coffee in his hand before he cringed. It was terrible. Quite possibly the worst coffee he'd ever tasted. It was almost as though it had been filtered through old boot leather, and left out in the sun to get warm.

He hated hospitals. They reminded him too often of cases that he didn't want to remember. Cases like this one, or the last one he and Thatcher had done. Right now he was pissed, worried, and emotional. It was basically the antithesis of everything he worked hard to hide. He felt like a live wire, swinging around in the air, and no one had quite gotten to turn the power off from the mains.

Violet was hurt. She'd been shot. The man was currently being held at the MDPD until proper transport to the field office was possible. It was best that Liam wasn't allowed to be in the same room as him. The guy would have probably ended up with a pavement facial, among other less than savory methods being used on him.

The fact that he wasn't allowed to check up on his partner's status was more than nervewracking. Instead, he waited until the general visitation hours were in effect, and found himself standing at her door, brow furrowed with concern. Her father was offering to escort him away. Great. That was just great.

She had dismissed her parents, and now Liam stood there, feeling incredibly foolish, and sick to his stomach with worry. His expression of concern faded as he walked into the room. She didn't want him there.

"Making sure you're in recovery. Need to include the incident in my report." It was taking all of his willpower to not come out and say it, to not lash out at her.

He shook his head at her comment. "You may not know much about me, but I don't lie. If I say I'm going to visit you in the hospital, then I'm going to visit you in the hospital."

the one thing that violet was glad of was that she was okay and alive. everything else could be dealt with once she was getting on the road to recovery properly. it hadn't been all that long since she'd been put back into her room after being in the recovery room. the fact that her parents were there was amazing. she really didn't know what she'd have done if she'd have woken up on her own. there had been flashes, of the moments after she'd been shot but she couldn't remember everything. she remembered liam being there and holding onto her and she remembered telling him that she didn't want to die. but there was a lot that was still hazy and she wondered if it was best she didn't remember everything.

hospitals weren't her favourite place in the world but it was necessary for her to be there. however, as soon as she was able to move around on her own, she'd ask to be discharged. she just wanted to recover in the comfort of her own apartment. her mom said she'd stay a couple of days when that happened which violet appreciated.

when liam came in, she knew she'd been slightly harsh and off hand with him, what she hadn't expected was for him to address her the way that he had. for a few long moments, violet just looked at him, suddenly wishing that she'd listened to her father when he'd said liam wasn't welcome. her vision began to swim and the stinging in her eyes signalled that there were tears there ready to fall but she took in what she hoped was a discreet, deep breath, and hoped none dripped out of her eyes. liam wasn't there to check on her, not by the words that he'd said. that much was clear.

"of course. procedure." her voice sounded thick as she spoke, the threat of tears was still there for her. but she just had to keep on hoping she didn't cry. she looked down at the sheets, playing with the edges of it, a tear betraying her and dripping down into it, followed by another. she waited a couple of moments before looking back up at him, "i don't remember you saying that." she said softly, voice wavering a little.

"what do you need to know for the incident report?" it was at that moment, the way he stood, the way he looked at her, that vi's heart did break into a million little pieces. it wasn't like she'd had zero hope before the shooting, maybe there had been a little bit of hope after the kiss, no matter how much she said he hated her, even if that was true, he'd kissed her and that had given birth to the tiniest inkling of hope. but it was gone now and it hurt. at least she could focus on the pain in her side, rather than the pain in her heart.

He was ignoring the daggers being glared into his back by her parents. He didn't want to think about how poorly they thought of him. He didn't want to think about any of it.

She looked terrible, but better than when he honestly thought she was going to die in his arms. However, her reaction hadn't helped him at all. It was akin to twisting the knife further into his hear, and pushing it deeper. Then again, it was his own damn fault. All of this was his fault. If he hadn't pushed her away things could have been better between them. Maybe then she wouldn't have tried so hard to prove herself to him.

"You don't remember much, do you?" He had to ask. He needed to know what she did remember. He hoped she remembered some of it at least. Maybe she'd remember that he didn't care about protocol as much as he let on. Not when it meant the life of another partner.

He let out a sigh before moving to stand closer to the bed, and pulled his phone out to take notes. "What made you go up the stairs without backup?"

He needed to know. It wasn't even for the report. It was for himself. He needed to know why he had partners that felt the urge to throw themselves into the midst of the danger with little thought for the consequences.

i'm so sorry vi.

violet knew her parents were protective, had known that all her life. they were close and she did tell them everything. even the things that made her sad and might make them worry. she told them. so she knew that her father and mother were both mad at him.

as she lay there, she couldn't really feel much pain but she knew that was due to the meds they had her on. she was due another dose and the throbbing was just about starting to return. she'd undergone major surgery and she was most definitely feeling the effects of that. she wanted to push herself so she could go home. she hated being the centre of all this fuss really. she'd made the decision to go up those stairs. it was part of her role but maybe there was a part of her that so desperately wanted liam to see was she was a great agent. but it didn't matter anymore. she'd be sidelined for a while, visits to the shrink as well. but it was protocol, and that, apparently that was why liam was there. he hadn't even asked if she was ok. she swallowed back a lump in her throat as she fought so hard not to cry.

she shook her head, she didn't remember anything, "nothing." a small sigh left her lips as she glanced away from him, looking at the monitors for a few moments before she looked back at him. she just wanted it to stop hurting, this time it was her heart that was hurting. he didn't care - he wanted to get information about the incident and that was it. the fact he hadn't asked how she was was making it even more apparent.

as he moved to stand closer, violet pulled the cover up more, folding her arms, a defensive action. she also made sure not to look at him. she bit her lips, chewing it just a little before she answered, staring straight ahead, "i wanted to get the first floor cleared and you were busy not telling me where you wanted me to go so..." she shrugged a little, wincing at the action, even though it wasn't a large movement, it still hurt. "..but i should have waited. i know that now." her voice didn't even feel like her own.

Seeing her covering herself more made him worried. It was nothing to do with the incident. It was everything to do with the two of them. She didn't want him to see any part of her. She was defending herself from him, and he had done everything to deserve it. That didn't make it hurt any less. It didn't make him feel any less powerless in this entire situation.

What Violet didn't know was that he had already filed his report. He'd glossed over the fact that she had gone upstairs without so much as a warning to him. He wasn't about to throw her under the bus.

Liam was purely questioning her to make sure that he hadn't been completely foolish. He took a deep breath before writing down what she said. "Right. So, any other reason beyond being pissed at me for not giving away our location?" It sounded so much harsher than he'd intended. He shook his head slightly. "Sorry V--- Montgomery. Not what I meant. Just... That's a painful and could have been a costly lesson to learn is all."

He couldn't dare give himself another chance. He couldn't stand this any longer. He needed to leave and crawl into the first bar he could find. Maybe Cal could join him. Probably not.

Either way, he was about to get so completely tanked. Perhaps a few bottles at home would be the better option. Then he didn't hve to bother Cal, or anyone at all.

i'm so sorry vi.

violet wanted this conversation to be over already. it hurt and she was getting upset. she was tired of getting upset over him. it happened more and more lately. she wasn't sure if she was going to be able to work with him when she went back. in fact, she knew she wasn't going to be able to. with a sigh, she shook her head to herself and jusr hope he didn't see. violet didn't want liam to see how much the way he was being with her as getting to her but she wasn't sure how much longer she could hold back on her tears and the fact that she wanted to yell at him, ask him why he hated her so much. but she couldn't. she just had to kepe her mouth shut. she had to be strong, even though she just wanted to break down.

it was like he'd rather be elsewhere, maybe that was why he was in such a mood with her, why all he was focused on was getting his report done. well, she'd give him the information. that was what he needed, then fine. she could be strong enough to do that.

however, at his next words, she broke. that was her final straw. a few tears leakd out of her eyes as she looked up at him, making sure he could see now, could see just what he was doing to her. "i wasn't pissed at you....i just knew that oyu were securing the other people." she swallowed hard and sighed as she lifted a hand to wipe her cheeks, fresh tears still falling. with a sigh, she chewed her bottom lip. the way he'd addressed her, spoken to her, she was at her end point. she couldn't do this anymore. "no, it is what you meant. let's not lie to each other." she was still crying.

"please leave. i'm tired." with that she turned her head away and stared off at the wall, tears still rollong down her cheeks. she'd never had her heart broken before and she decided that it was something she wished she wasn't experiencing. but here she was.

It hurt seeing her so defensive. He cared for her, but he had no way to explain it. Especially not with her having forgotten all about the shooting. He'd tried. Damn it, he had tried to show her then that he was angry but also that he was genuinely concerned. He didn't know how he could even begin to tell her how he felt. And then there were tears.

Damn him.

He was just about to explain things when she was saying what he meant. His jaw clenched as he forced himself to not say everything he was thinking right then and there.

"Right." He felt his chest tighten before he shook his head. "I will see you later then." He turned quickly and made his way out the door. His first stop on his way home was the liquor store in order to buy a case of vodka, or... well anything else really.

i'm so sorry vi.
